Part 1: Summary

Overview

  • Part 1: Eat Right 4 Your Type summary
  • Part 2: Scientific Evidence for and against
  • Part 3: Take home message

Part 2: Arguments

Source 1: One Man's Meat

  • Some claim that the "nutritional effect of food depends on ancestry, blood type, and metabolic rate" (Cowley).
  • People have individual needs nutritionally
  • The blood type diet puts us in touch with ancestors
  • We eat more processed foods and work out less than our ancestors did
  • No clinical studies have been done to prove the diet works

Source 2: Fakes and Fraud in Commercial Diets

Source 3: Blood Type Diets Lack Supporting Evidence: A Systematic Review

  • D'Adamo's claim: Lectins in food bind to antigens of ABO system, causing "agglutination" for blood type B (Larhammar)
  • Argument: Lectins are present on all cell surfaces in food and body. There is no evidence supporting the agglutination of lectins for certain types
  • D'Adamo's claim: Type O is the oldest blood type
  • Argument: Type O is actually arose from a recent mutation.

Uses the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach to disprove the blood type diet.

  • 1415 references were checked.
  • 16 articles were identified
  • Out of the last 16, only 1 met all requirements
  • Talked about MSN blood types. Not ABO blood types.
