Trench warfare was important to world war 1 because it helped all sides mow down the enemies from a far distance away causing many casualties to all sides of the war. This was also important for the war because it inspired advances in other areas of war technology like chemical warfare and tanks.

The other creation of trench warfare was a new type of warfare, chemical warfare. This was another attempt to counter trenches. This created more discomfort in the trenches because the had to have either clothes and chemicals or early attempts at gas masks with them at all times. It made it hard to aim when you had a mask on your face.

A benefit of trench warfare was that it inspired everyone that joined the war to create new technology in attempt to counter the protection of trenches. This rush to create new technology produced the tank, fighting airplanes(ish), and zeppelins. Although these new technologys didn't work as planned they still inspired new creations to be made in the future.

Trench warfare was used in WW1 as a new advancement in war strategy. This strategy had its advantages and drawbacks throughout the years of the war.

Trench Warfare

The harsh living conditions of the trenches was a drawback of this type of war. Soldiers would wait in the trenches close to each other waiting for instructions and trying to avoid the cat sized rats. They also had to be as hygiene active as the could to avoid trench foot.

An early Mark 1 tank used to counter the advancements in trench warfare by running over them.

Shown in this picture, a small group of men could man a machine gun in a trench and easily mow down the oncoming opposing enemies.
