Light upon Light

The combination of the olive oil and the lamp in a crystal glass, produces an extraordinary light. Light upon light. The believer that possesses complete iman and true beneficial knowledge, receives light upon light. He is firm where ever he goes, and he is of benefit to all people; guiding them through the dark paths with his light.

Surah an-Noor V. 35

Oil From an Olive Tree

The lamp is lit from oil that is from a blessed olive tree. It is neither from the east nor the west. And even without the lamp being lit, the oil still shines. This blessed olive oil represents authentic knowledge, the Quran and Sunnah. It is not from this world, but from The One Who Created it.

The Glass: A clear glass that doesn't obstruct light

The glass is very clear and it shines like a pearly star. It is free from filth or spots. It is a crystal globe which preserves light and also reflects it. If you were to remove the glass, the lamp wouldn't be strong. The glass represents the heart of a believer. It is clean, clear and preserves the light of Iman, even in darkness.

Like a niche: Indentation in the Wall

Allah subhanahu wa ta'aala uses the parable of a niche. The niche protects and preserves the light.

The niche, here, represents the chest cavity of a believer.

The chest carries and protects the heart.

A Lamp: A Tool for Light

Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala

gives the parable of a lamp.

This lamp shines bright

especially in its niche. The

lamp represents Iman. And

Iman is in the heart.
