  • Large scale of agricultural production such as coffee, tea and tobacco
  • Small scale of agricultural production

  • It involves the subjugation and exploitation of the African countries in order to increase the wealth of the colonial powers

  • There are many reasons why a country becomes a colony

Case study-CHINA IN AFRICA

NEGATIVE IMPACTS

How has the history of colonialism impacted the developing world today?

WHat legacy did colonialism leave?

  • Some would argue that "the scramble for Africa" is still ongoing today with asian countries taking over
  • The chinese push African national business aside, which become bankrupt, and create more chinese business
  • Major cultural delusion- with evidence of "china-towns" popping up as they settle into the continent
  • Mass environmental pollution
  • Jobs taken by chinese skilled labor and not by the inhabitants of countries
  • As a general consensus, many people may think that once a colonial power leaves its colony, their influence is no longer present. This is wrong; instead they often leave behind political and social tension which leads to many violent conflicts.

SHORT CLIP

Artificial Borders: Colonial powers established borders according to negotiation between empires with little consideration of the social situation within the country E.G. Libya- Chad Conflict

Ethnic Rivalry & Unequal distribution of Resources: Many times, powers took control of a country and established a 'favoured race'. This promoted inter-race rivalry, which drew the attention away from the fact that exploitation was taking place E.G Rwandan Genocide

Exploitation of Human Rights: In general, colonisation tended not to consider the human rights of the people under their colonies. This meant profiting from cheap labour and caused socio-economic polarization. E.G- South African Apartheid

  • The chinese have developed a lot of infrastructure in certain areas of the continent. (Kenya and Uganda for example)
  • Many schools and hospitals have been built for the growing population
  • Technological advances have taken place in the continent
  • GDP growth in Africa has grown since the chinese became interested in relations with Africa
  • It has grown by 4.9% from 2000 to 2008

thank you for listening!

Neo-colonialism today

In today's world, evidence has shown that within post colonial countries there is still influence left by the countries that once controlled them

The countries which have power over them, keep them in a state of dependency which stops them developing without aid

We would therefore conclude that colonization primarily had a negative impact on developing countries today

However, there have been a few positive aspects which have benefited these countries

  • Neocolonialism uses capitalism, globalization and cultural hegemony to influence a country

  • It refers to the unequal economic + power relations that exists between former colonizing nations

  • Even after countries gain independence, former colonies still rely on the worlds superpowers
