The General Theory of Relativity
- The escape velocity at the event horizon in a black hole = speed of light.
- An object would need a speed faster than light to get out of the black hole. This is impossible.
- It is a few kilometres across.
- An accretion disk is a rotating disk of matter around a massive body under the influence of gravity.
- Black holes can be detected by the radiation that is emitted and the behaviour of matter near it. This radiation is in the form of X-rays.
- Named after astronomer, Karl Schwarzschild, who calculated this solution for the theory of general relativity.
- The Sun has a Schwarzschild radius of 3 km and the Earth's is 9 mm.
What happes if a star approaches a black hole?
Nuclear Fusion in the core of a star
What is the biggest black hole that has ever been detected?
The solar system. Huge, eh?
- A mysteryious object where nothing can escape. Not even light.
- A singularity with immense density and gravity.
- Where does it lead to? Why do they exist? Why are they invisible?
