Rhetorical Précis

In his memoir Hope’s Boy (2008), Andrew Bridge experiences that even young children live with the struggle of feeling alone and the need to be strong. Bridge develops his memoir by employing irony of a young boy, who has no positive mother or father figure in his life, and who must fend for himself and act stronger than what a young boy should: “Unlike her, with her blood on the walls, I needed to survive. I needed to be safe” (Bridge 112). Bridge’s purpose in writing Hope’s Boy is to prove not only do adults have to fend for themselves but so do young neglected children. Andrew Bridge uses his own real life experiences and struggles to connect with his readers whether they can relate to his situation or not.

Visual

This visual connects with the book because Andy’s mom is a teen mom and although she is not a good mom many teen moms are. Not all teen moms are irresponsible, some teens having kids better their lives for the baby which betters the mom as a person and makes the parent(s) mature a hole lot faster

Optic

O- This visual is about teen moms and their ability to raise a child just as well an older mom can.

P- A young girl wearing a white shirt with purple writing on her back. The girl is obvious a teen mom. She has her back turned away from the photographer.

T- Today’s, Society Treats Teen Mothers Unfairly is the title of this visual. On the back of the teen’s shirt it says “but that doesn’t make me a bad mother.”

I- The words on her back explain the way the teen mom feels. She knows that just because she is a young mom doesn’t mean she can’t take care of her own child.

C- In today's society teen mothers are looked down upon. Many people believe that they are irresponsible, not mature enough to raise a child on their own. This visual represents a teen mom who has her back against society with the word "but that doesn't make me a bad mother." Everything comes together and connects with the book because Andrew Bridge's mom was a teen mom and although she wasn't a good mom many teen moms are.

Context-Driven Question

Statics show that about 800,000 teens are pregnant each year while nearly 50% end up having an abortion, many decide to keep their child. Keeping a child at such a young age many teens are faced with struggles. Does being a teen mother mean one doesn’t have the same ability or knowledge to raise a child just as well as an older mother would? How does this affect a teen’s life?

Reasons:

The teen mom might be mature for her age some teen moms are more mature than a twenty year old is.

The teen might have raised her own siblings.

Having a baby might make the teen mom better her life for the baby which is bettering herself as a person.

Counter-Argument

Teen Mothers are not responsible enough and haven't had the experiences as an older mom has.

Rebuttal

A young girl may have had experience with younger siblings and many may have raised their own siblings. Some mothers that are in their late twenties are still not mature enough to have a child. Many teen moms better themselves for their children’s sake.

Bridge’s future and Hodgkin’s disease

Andrew Bridge had a difficult childhood, he had no one there to support him in anyway. Bridge’s mom was gone, his father was long gone when he was two and he never heard back from his grandma until he was a senior in Harvard Law School. He asked his grandma Katherine why she didn’t come to get him: “ She admitted to having thought about it, but was sure that a little boy had to be happy living in a big house with a pool”(Bridge 297). Although he didn’t care about any of that and all he ever wanted was someone their for him grandma said: “I never had all that to give you sweetheart” (297). His senior year in law school he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease. This disease is a cancer that starts in cells called Lymphocytes. It begun in his neck with large lump the size of a tennis ball. Bridge went through seven months of chemotherapy and was cured. Andrew Bridge’s life was a struggle since he was born but he made something out of himself without anyone's help.
