Climate and Population

France is a country in Western Europe. France borders the Atlantic Ocean. To the west is the Bay of Biscay, to the north is the English Channel and the North Sea. France has mostly flat plains or rolling hills in the north and west. The remainder is mountainous, especially Pyrenees in the South and the Alps in the east. The highest point is Mont Blanc at 4,808 meters above sea level and the lowest point is Rhone river delta at 2 meters. It is the largest nation in Western Europe.

There are about 66 million people living in France. The north and northwest have a temperate climate, while a mixture of maritime influences, latitude and altitude produce a varied climate in the rest of France. In the west, the climate is mostly oceanic with a high level of rainfall, mild winters and cool to warm summers. Inland the climate becomes more mainland with hot, stormy summers, colder winters and less rain. The climate of the Alps and other mountainous regions is mainly alpine, with the number of days with temperatures below freezing over 150 per year and snow cover lasting for up to six months.
