Tensions in Literature

Symbolic Values in Conflict

There is a symbolic value in conflict when a character, or group of characters, identifies with a larger value through their conflicts with those who hold opposing values. Basically the characters battles become symbolic representations of a larger war, such as law versus chaos, change versus tradition, and idealism versus realism.

A tension in literature is two opposite polarities. These age old ideas have such a deep contrast that they are often the driving forces behind the plot. The most familiar one is good versus evil. Other common examples are love versus hate, past versus present, and beauty versus brutality as well as many others.

Context: This video from the animated film version of the story of Moses from the Old Testament. Moses and the Pharaoh Ramses grew up as brothers but now Moses is trying to force the Pharaoh into freeing the Hebrew slaves through the power that God has granted him.

Similar to the way that putting black and white together makes both more vibrant and distinct; ideas, values and characters also become more definite through a strong contrast.

Example: In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Ralph represents civilization, while Jack represents chaos and barbarianism. It is their core values that causes them to juxtaposed.

Example: In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare there is a lot of conflict between Romeo and Juliet's love and the feud between their families. This reflects the tension between love and hate.

Analysis: This story is a great illustration of symbolic values in conflict. Moses represents freedom and the will of God, while the Pharaoh Ramses represents power and pride.

Dramatic Foil

The Prestige

A technique of characterization that takes advantage of contrasting characteristics such as opinions, morals, physical appearance, behavior and attitude. The contrast between the characters enhances and strengthens the attributes of each. They can be either friends or enemies.

Directed By: Christopher Nolan

Example: In The Things They Carried (entire work) by Tim O'Brien, Jimmy Cross sexually desires his love interest, Martha, whereas Timmy and Linda's love is real. This makes Timmy a foil to Jimmy.

Trigger Warning!!! Graphic Content

Example: In Hamlet by William Shakespeare, both Hamlet and Leartes fathers are murdered. Hamlet is weak and does not deal with the situation properly while Leartes shows bravery in the face of the same plight.

In this clip you can see the foil characters of Andier and Borden. They were best friends turned rivals. They are essentially the same person; obsessed to be the best magician and both lead a double life.

Borden creates one duplicate named Fallon who cuts his fingers off to maintain congruence with Borden. Andier kills all of his duplicates to maintain singularity.
