Canada's role was to battle with the Allied Forces (USA and Britain) to invade Normandy, Europe. They did this in order to make an entry point to Europe to invade Germany. For their part of the invasion, the Canadians have to assault a beachfront code-named "Juno". This was Canada's largest military operation.
On June 6th 1944 the execution of D-Day began. Allied forces began landing on the Normandy, France beaches. The battle was a successful step to signal the beginning of the end of World War 2 and also Nazi Germany.
In every single source, it has different numbers of how many casualties there was. This is because many of the soldiers bodies weren't found or they were prisoners of war. But the range of casualties is from a total of 335 dead and 739 other types of casualties.
This was one of the biggest military invasions in history. So there was extensive planning for the Allies ( U.S, Canada and Britain) to attack along Normandy's coast. This plan consisted of fooling the Germans to where the attack was going to be held, this damaged them with confusion to plan for themselves. Once the plan proceeded the invasion was won and France was liberated. Canada was the only Allied force to meet their objective that day. This made a passage for the Allied troops to further more invade into Germany.
On D-Day, different armed services such as some from Australia, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, France, Greece, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway and Poland all contributed as armed forces during the battle. A huge army were in the south of England. American troops that had up to 1.25 million joined a similar number of British and Commonwealth groups, this included 30,000 Canadians. 4,000 landing craft, 700 war ships and 11 000 planes were all ready for use by these people.
This battle was considered a victory because many allies were successful in landing Normany. With this many allies, they were able to liberate France from the Nazi, making a big entry point to Europe. This battle lead to the eventual defeat of Germany because Hitler was now caught with war on 2 fronts: The Allied Forces from the east, and The Soviet Red Army from the west.
D-Day, Day of Deliverance was planned for June 5 1944 but the invasion was postponed due to bad weather conditions. On June 6th at 2:00am, paratroopers were set to protect the landing forces. About an hour later 2000 bombers began to pound the german defense that was on the beach. At 5:30am air raids were joined by guns of the allied warships and at exactly 6:30am the first waves of Canadian, British and American Troops poured onto beaches of France. After this set of events, D-Day began June 6 1944 and ended on June 30, 1944.
Even though there was 150,000 Allied troops and 14,000 were Canadian their invasion was still very successful. The Royal Canadian contributed 110 ships and 10,000 sailors on shore. While the R.C.A.F was bombing the enemies. Canada successfully invaded "Juno" creating a passage for the Allied troops to go into Germany.
