The Water Cycle & Phase Changes

Gas to Liquid

Condensation

When changing from a gas to

a liquid, the gas looses energy,

to become a liquid. This phase

change is exothermic.

Liquid to Gas

Evaporation

This phase change happens when a

liquid is given heat, then starts

to boil, then evaporates into the

air, which would then be considered

a gas. This phase change is

endothermic.

Phase Changes

Matter can exist in one of

the 3 main states: solid, liquid,

or gas. Elements and compounds

can move from one phase to

another when specific physical conditions are present.

Gas to Solid

Deposition

This phase change happens when a

gas becomes a solid without going

through the liquid state. This phase

change is exothermic.

Solid to Gas

Sublimation

This phase change happens when a

solid turns into a gas without

going through the liquid state. This

phase change is endothermic.

Resources

Solid to Liquid

Melting

The atoms of a liquid have

more energy than the atoms of

a solid. So that means this

process requires energy to go from

a solid to a liquid. This

phase change is endothermic.

Condensation

Liquid to Solid

Condensation is the process by which water vapor in the air is changed into liquid water.

Freezing

When a liquid changes to a

solid, the molecules become closer together. Also transitioning from a liquid to

a solid the liquid expands. This

phase change is exothermic.

Evaporation

Evaporation is the process by which water changes from a liquid to a gas or vapor.

Precipitation

The Water Cycle

Precipitation is water released from clouds in the form of rain, freezing rain, sleet, snow, or hail.

The Water Cycle has no definite place of starting. Most of Earth's water exists in the oceans. The suns heat, heats the ocean water, and then some of that water evaporates into the air while a little portion of the water is added as ice and snow sublimate directly from the solid state into vapor. The rising currents take this vapor up into the atmosphere, along with the water from evaporation. Precipitation then comes from cloud particles that collide, grow, and fall out of the sky. That precipitation hits the ground, and becomes groundwater. That ground water then goes to wells, rivers, lakes, or maybe back to the ocean.
