Carbon Cycle Vocabulary

Oxygen

A element that supports most organisms on Earth.

Law of Conservation of Mass

Hydrogen

A law that says it is impossible for mass to be made or demolished.

An element that is found in all organic compounds, like carbon.

Consumption

Carbon Dioxide

When something is used or used up.

A compound made up of the two elements carbon and oxygen.

Law of Conservation of Energy

Carbohydrate

A law that says it is impossible for energy to be made and destroyed, however, energy can be transformed.

A group,of molecules, containing carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, and sugars, starches, and fibers.

Carbon

Decomposition

Chlorophyll

An element that is found in all organic compounds.

The process of which something breaks down or rots.

A light energy catching green pigment found in the chloroplast of the cell.

Combustion

Glucose

A carbohydrate also known as sugar.

The chemical combination created at the collision of a substance and oxygen, resulting in the creation of heat and light.

Metabolism

Fossil Fuel

A material we use as fuel, that is made of the fossils, or bones of ancient decomposed organisms.

The result of the processes, both chemical and physical, that make, conserve, and destroy materials and substances that an organism produces.

Carbon Cycle

Chloroplast

The process of carbon circulating through living things and then moving in to the non living environment and back.

An organelle only found in plant cells that creates glucose by performing photosythesis.

Mitochondria

A cell organelle that provides energy for the cell by using glucose to perform cellular respiration.
