Peptide Hormones

Thickening of blood leads to possible heart attack or stroke
Anabolic Steroids

Performance-enhancing Drugs:

Extremely addictive (withdrawal symptoms), loss of concentration, low blood pressure
Some athletes use drugs to improve their performance, or are encouraged to do so by their coaches. These drugs are usually banned in sport - and they have nasty side effects. The temptation, sometimes, is just too great and still worth the risk..... WHY??
Diuretics
Increase how often you urinate - causing weight loss
Jockey, boxer, martial arts etc
Dehydration, cramp, kidney failure, dizziness
Why take performance-enhancing drugs?
Pressure coach/athletes/peers
Short lifespan of athlete
Desire to be the best:
Records etc
Can you think of any examples of athletes who have been caught?
Stimulants
Promote alertness (mental and physical) by affecting the CNS
Professional footballers (useful to offset the effects of lactic acid on muscles)
High blood pressure, strokes, heart and liver problems.
Beta Blockers
Control heart rate - steady shakey hands, have a calming effect

Thank You!
