The Ghost of Miss Annabel Spoon
No matter what hour, she lurked looking sour
be it it midnight or mid-afternoon.
Her dresses are Shabby. Her mood always crabby.
Her name was Miss Annabel Spoon.
Blabey (2011)
The ghost of Miss Annabel Spoon is haunting the village of Twee and the people that live there are not very happy, suffering “distemper and fits” because of their fear of the ghost.
No one seems to know what to do to about the ghost not even the Mayor, and the doctor says “WE’RE ALL DOOMED! DONT YOUR KNOW?”
Then along comes Herbert Kettle, a young man of the town wearing a dapper top hat who decides he shall simply ask the ghost ‘WHY?” she is haunting the village.
Well Herbert gets labeled insane and the townsfolk fear he faces a certain death if he is to approach Miss Annabel Spoon, but Herbert is not perturbed and sets off to set things straight.
1.
Write a narrative about how you think Miss Annabel Spoon died. Consider her lonelinss in death, and her need for friends, in your description of her life and death.
2.
Draw a picture of how you think Miss Annabel Spoon looked before she died. Think about the colours you use to reflect her being alive rather than a ghost as she is in the story.
3.
Herbert Kettle decides to simply ask Annabel Spoon why she is haunting the village. write a poem about bravery, courage and standing up for people who may not have a voice. You can base your poem on Herbert Kettle or you can chose a different character or situation. You may use rhyme and rhythm similar to story or your own choice of style.
The ghost is awfully glad to have a visitor and offers him scones, even though she has none!
They become firm friends of course and Miss Spoon’s need to roam the village seeking a friend is no longer, thus the haunting stops and the village is saved from their fears.
These 3 activities have been designed for Grade 5 class.
