History

In 1885, Patrick Hues Mell proposes that a new school be located in Athens nears UGA's campus.

Despite Mell's argument, Georgia Tech was founded in Atlanta later that year.

Dr. Charles H. Herty, felt that old gold was too similar to yellow which "symbolized cowardice."

The Beginning of "Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate"

Later in 1891, students voted old gold and white as Georgia Tech's school colors and were initially used for their uniforms during their first unofficial game against Auburn.

In 1891, UGA's literary magazine declared the school's colors to be "old gold, black, and crimson."

Name-Calling!

Georgia Tech calls UGA "The University (sic) of Georgia."

UGA calls Tech the "North Avenue Trade School."

How Many Games?

UGA and Georgia Tech argue about how many games they have played.

UGA refuses to count two of Tech's wins during World War II because their best players were fighting in the war.

Officially, however, the wins are counted.

1893: The Rivalry BEGINS!

Georgia Tech and University of Georgia play their first game and Tech wins 28-6 (YAY!)

After the 1893 football game against Tech, Herty removed old gold as an official school color.

ACC

Ramblin' Wreck Song created soon after and includes the lyrics, "To Hell With Georgia!"

"Glory, Glory"

first class graduating in 1804.

Officially, the song ends with "G-E-O-R-G-I-A"

SEC Formation

1932 - The SEC was formed. Georgia Tech and UGA are among the first members

1964 - Georgia Tech leaves the SEC due to concerns about student scholarships

Georgia Tech is independent for 15 years until the school joins the ACC

Georgia Tech is unable to rejoin the SEC because of UGA (BOO!)

When against Georgia Tech, UGA fans change the lyrics to "To hell with Georgia Tech!"

More Fun Facts!!!!

Both teams steal stuff from the other team before games.

While UGA dominates the rivalry, Georgia Tech has a longer winning streak.

Red BANNED!

Coach George O'Leary banned his football players from wearing red, one of UGA's colors.

If you wore red, your shirt was confiscated and you were forced to instead wear a white/gold shirt.

1919: UGA mocked Tech in a parade

Tech cut athletic ties with UGA for 6 years afterward.

World War I

While UGA Stopped its football program

during the war, Tech kept its program going

First Game Drama

HOW BOUT THEM DAWGS?

The Georgia Tech locker rooms have replicas of bulldogs in the urinals.

(Talk about taking a line seriously!!!)
