After saying their final good-byes to Thorgil and the berserker crew; Jack, Lucy and Bold Heart returned back fome. At first, everyone was shocked that they survived the berserker attack. But they were still grateful after what Jack did to protect their village. Unfortunately, the Bard never recovered from the Nightmare attack and is still brain-dead. Unexpectantly, Bold Heart rammed into the body of the Bard and somehow switched their minds back. The Bard then told Jack that hosting the mind of the crow was the only way Frith couldn't detect and attack him. After seeing what Jack has done throughout his journey, the Bard has no need to teach Jack anymore. He now knows Jack is now a strong enough Bard to be able to protect the village if trouble ever arose again.
As Jack and Lucy continue to sail back home, Thorgil reminds Jack how destructive the berserkers can still be. Although they have a temporary truce due to their new-found freedom, they're still the die-hard warriors they always were. But Thorgil will always remember what Jack did to her back at Mimur's Well.
It is 793 A.D., in a small village located in what is now the U.K., this is the time of peace. Everything keeps getting better for the protagonist Jack, as he has just been selected to be the Bard's apprentice. While working with the village's sorcerer, Jack is now experienced at controlling the life force around him. But everything changed when the berserkers attacked and kidnapped him and his sister Lucy.
During the time of Jack's apprenticeship, the Bard gave Jack a rune of protection to protect him from the upcoming invasion. But Queen Frith knew that the Bard could stop her invasion, so she sent a Nightmare to destroy his mind. Having given his only rune of protection to Jack, the Bard was defenseless against the attack, leaving Jack with a mentally-destroyed Bard. With the village now vulnerable to attack, Jack calls up a heavy fog to cloak the village. His plan works, except he and his sister getting ambushed and kidnapped by the berserkers.
After traversing through the harsh conditions of the Jotun homeland, Jack and Thorgil finally reach Mimur's Well. But in order to get the well to work, they must sacrifice something of greatest importance to them. After losing everything that had value in her life, Thorgil tries to commit suicide to let Jack drink from the well. Having feelings for Thorgil, Jack gives his sacred rune of protection from the Bard to Thorgil to remove her sense of rage to herself. After sacrificing Jack's protection and Thorgil's rage, they are both able to drink from the well.
After Jack and Thorgil returned back from Mimur's Well, Jack told Frith how to regrow fer hair. Frith was told to cur a third of the goddess Freya's cats and lay it on a white cloth under the moonlight, and lay on those shavings. Unfortunately Frith cut all of the cats' hair and turned herself into a hairy monster. In the midst of Frith's destructive rampage, Jack and Thorgil narrowly escaped with Lucy back to the ship. With Frith no longer controlling the berserkers, that's one less force Jack has to protect Lucy from.
Next thing Jack knew is that he's been held captive to the monsters that were attacking his village. Berserkers were Queen Frith's main force for raiding villages. They solely exist on fighting til they die and drink a special potion that turns them into wolf-like beasts that feel nothing in battle. So Jack knew his ametuer Bard skills head-on can't get his sister back. But he did show off some of his skills to help gain the crew's trust. He even found an odd crow which he later calls Bold Heart during his 'calming the sea' duties.
The two things Jack realizes from stepping into the land of Trolls is that there is an endless winter and everything is 10 times bigger and dangerous compared to back home. The survival in the Jotun world was difficult with most water being frozen, picking out the edible plants from the poisonous ones, and the 40 ft. animals trying to kill them. Even Olaf died saving Jack from a 50 ft. troll-bear. If life couldn't get any worse, Jack and Thorgil also get captured by a dragon on the same day.
When they finally reach the berserker village, jack's handler Olaf decides to show off his new slave Bard around town. Olaf may be one of the strongest berserkers in history, he has a strong respect to everyone on his crew (even Jack). Olaf eventually shows Jack to Frith and makes him sing a few songs about Olaf's many victories. To show respect to her Queen, Thorgil gives Lucy to Frith. Still trying to keep up with the event laid before him, Jack accidentally makes the queen lose her precious hair. In order to save his sister from Frith, he has to travel deep into Jotun (Troll) lands, drink from a mystic knowledge well to learn the spell to grow Frith's hair back, or have Lucy sacrificed to the Nordic Gods.
Thorgil was the person who truly kidnapped Lucy during the raid, her stubbornness lead her to believe that she was Lucy's owner. Although she isn't a giant like rest of the berserkers crew, having a family line and living with their barbaric customs for a long time has turned her into the 'shield maiden' she is now. No matter how many times Jack tries to reason with her, it usually ends with him not winning the argument. Part of it is her jealousy on Jack being the crew's favorite. Although they don't see it now, they have a major effect on each other in the future.
