Imperialism is the policy of extending the rule or authority of a strong empire or nation over foreign countries, often acquiring/holding colonies and its dependencies. Nationalism is also a cause supporting imperialism for it is the national spirit or aspirations.

- Homes/property transferred to British government; natives had little to no say
- Men forced to leave villages to support themselves and their families; no high paying jobs due to British workers filling in
- African culture replaced by European culture through education systems; traditions become lax
- Division of African culture; rival united, kinship/family split due to British artificial boundaries; caused great tension among the people
- Africans lost control of land/independence; Indirect British rule
- Many Africans died of unknown diseases carried by the British. (small pox) Death was vast due to no immunity
- Natives often fought the British in order to defend their way of life; many lives lost during rebellions
- High demand of cash crops caused food shortages/starvation
- Cultures/customs destroyed after traditional authority figures were replaced
