the Treaty of Holston

The Cherokees

as allies of the US

A lack of balance

in this alliance

• Treaty of “peace and friendship” --> no longer be enemies

+ count on each other if one of them is attacked

• Protection of the US --> given one thousand dollars annually

+ given specific lands

+ punish without having the US government interfering

• Inform the US if anyone is plotting against them

But the US did not promise to do the same

which leads to thinking that the treaty is unbalanced

and is somewhat less beneficial to the Cherokee

  • Some Americans can enter the Cherokee territory with a passport from the US president

  • Americans can use the road and the river which both go through the Cherokee territory

  • The borders of the Cherokee territory are redefined

  • The Cherokee seem to be prisoners

Gathering the whole nation and signing agreements is not

the Cherokee traditional way of doing things so

that is going to affect their culture

Conclusion

The treaty modified the Cherokee culture

A violence-free relationship

The U.S clearly benefit more from this treaty :

  • Reduction of the size of the Cherokee territory
  • Cherokee have no complete control over their territory
  • Alteration of the culture of the Cherokee

-> the Quebec Act

  • Centralized representation

  • US monopoly on Cherokee trade

  • From hunters to sedentary herdsmen

and cultivators

Introduction

The Treaty of Holston

July 2, 1791

William Blount and Cherokee representatives

Throughout the treaty, the Americans seem to give power and advantages

to the Cherokee in order to please them - yet the document is clearly

a means to retain their power, influence and cultural identity.

Outline :

I. The obvious status of allies the Cherokee will embody

II. The disguised lack of balance in fulfilling each party’s interests

III. The implied alteration of the Cherokee cultural identity
