The people were protesting the Michigan State Police because they felt that their fourth amendment was being violated as they were being stopped for a sobriety check point .
The trial was held by a group of citizens against the state of Michigan to sue against the fact that their fourth amendment had been violated. The defense argued that they were trying to catch drunk drivers before they caused accidents and death, so it was crucial for the checkpoints to be surprising and unannounced.
The Fourth Amendment states that you can not be searched without a warrant, and it also has to be a reasonable search if without a warrant.
