The Battle of Adwa took place on March 1. 1896. Italian General Baratierti planned to surprise Ethiopian forces with an early morning attack expecting them to be asleep. The Ethiopians had already risen early for church services. Having learned of the Itialian attack the Ethiopians they attacked. On May 2 1889 the Emperor of Ethiopia signed a treaty of amity with the Italians, which supposedly gave them control over Eritera and the Red Sea, in return for recogniziton for his power. However it did not say the same thing in Italian as it did in Amharic. It really said that Italy had established a protecorate over Ethiopia.
Because of Ethiopian refusal to abide by the Italian version of the treaty, despite economic disadvantages in their country, Italy decided on a miliatry solution to force Ethiopia to abide by the Italian version of the treaty. While doing this Italy believed they could exploit divisions with Ethiopia.
