Procedure:

-As a class discuss each step in detail as to what it means

-Each student is given the 5 steps on small separate sheets of paper and a large sheet of paper with 5 divided sections

-Students makes a flowchart of the steps and create a drawing of what each step means.

-Students discuss their flowchart with their classmates.

Unit Description

Five Steps for the Voting Process

Goals:

  • I will provide the students with the steps of voting.
  • I will provide the students with the criteria for an appropriate timeline.
  • I will provide the students with an opportunity to share their timelines with their classmates.

Objectives:

  • The students will be able to create a flowchart of five steps for voting by labeling the five steps consecutively and drawing an example of each step with 100% accuracy.

Making a Voting Flow Chart Continued

Grade: 2nd grade

Unit Goals:

  • After studying the process of voting in a United States election, the students will hold their own election in the classroom and demonstrate an understanding of the voting process.
  • After discussing the importance of voting, the students will write a short description of why voting is important to the best of their ability.
  • Having reviewed the rules and regulations in order to vote, the students will be able to list these rules and regulations to the best of their ability.

Procedure:

-Prompt students with the question what does the word vote mean? What do we know about voting so far?

-The numbers one through five labeled on a piece of construction paper. The five steps of voting will each be typed on their own piece of construction paper.

-As a class, identify the five steps of voting.

National Standards: K-4 Content Standards

  • Fundamental values and principles: Students should be able to explain the importance of the fundamental values and principles of American democracy.
  • To achieve this standard, students should be able to: explain the importance for themselves, their school, their community, and their nation of each of the following fundamental principles of American democracy:
  • People exercise their authority directly by voting for or against certain rules, laws, or candidates as well as by voting in community or town meetings.
  • People exercise their authority indirectly through representatives they elect to make, apply, and enforce laws and to manage disputes about them.

Minnesota State Standards

  • Democratic government depends on informed and engaged citizens who exhibit civic skills and values, practice civic discourse, vote and participate in elections, apply inquiry and analysis skills and take action to solve problems and shape public policy.
  • Demonstrate voting skills, identify rules that keep a voting process fair, and explain why voting is important. (2.1.1.1.1)
