Crustal Displacements

  • Caused an uplift specifically in the shorelines and the offshore line area
  • Slope failure and subsidence on the southern,eastern and western coastline of the island
  • The summit of Kilauea subsided, causing a small eruption as well.

Witnesses

  • 32 campers were at Halape beach park near the base of a cliff when it happened
  • 10 people included in a boyscout hike during this time personally were awoken by the magnitude of both earthquakes

Occurance

Kilauea Eruption

  • Combination of 2 earth quakes, and a Mercalli intensity of VIII (Severe)
  • 1: at 3:35 AM (PST), with a magnitude of 5.7 and struck on Kilauea's south flank.
  • 2: at 4:48 AM (PST),with a magnitude of 7.2 and triggered a tsunami
  • influenced by magnetic movement
  • Created a slight eruption
  • No one was killed during the eruption
  • The only thing that remains is a "No Parking" sign in that area
  • Samples have been taken from the volcano to predict when it might strike again

Damages

  • Killed two people, injured 28
  • Destroyed houses, fishing boats, piers
  • Triggered a slight eruption on Kilauea
  • $4.1 million in damages
  • Damage from tsunami on the south coast caused fatalities, injuries and property losses

Tsunami

  • Earthquake caused a large coastal block that subsided into the ocean
  • Caused some shorelines to permanently be submerged
  • Tsunami warning was issued after the first tsunami struck (84 seconds) due to
  • Wave struck 30 sec after the tsunami hit

Facts

The earthquakes created a tsunami that was 47 feet tall and could be detected in other places such as Japan, California and Samoa
