SMART Goal
Incentives
- Field Trip (possibly Six Flags Physic Day)
- Field Day based on math topic
- Pi Day
- Small achievement incentives given out monthly (candy or restaurant coupons )
Our goal is to improve Lexile scores. The mathematics department will incorporate converting equations to story problems, as well as STEM articles from Newsela at least twice a month.
Common Assessments
Trends
- All math courses have common unit assessments.
- Floyd County Benchmark Assessments
- Common assessments provide data to our teachers if our strategies are having an impact.
Strategies
- On the Algebra I EOC, the Algebra and Function domain had the highest percentage of remediate learners.
- In Algebra I, Students lack reasoning skills and number sense.
- In Geometry, 68% of the students were remediate in the Congruence and Similarity Domain.
- Overall, students tend to be weak with functions and equations.
- There is a stronger correlation between success on a EOC and Lexile score among honor students when compared to regular education students.
- Teacher will use manipulatives to teach functions and equations.
- Teachers will use more error analysis to allow students to read and reason mathematically.
- Teachers will incorporate periodic review of concepts throughout the year.
- Teachers will allow their students to convert equations to story problems and model with a table or diagram.
- Teacher will incorporate reading using STEM articles from Newsela.
