Pistols From The 1700's
The Cavalry "Horse" Pistols were held securely on horseback belts.
Below is a horse back pistol holder.
The gun shown below is a "Kentucky" Pistol which is similar to the Kentucky Rifle shown to the bottom right hand corner but is shortened and she were the sights and locks.
The British Calvary "Horse" Pistols were most widely carried by Americans and the newer model that was made in 1780 was much shorter and lighter.

There were 6 different types of pistols that the colonists used.
There was British Cavalry "Horse" Pistols, French Cavalry Pistols,and American Pistols which branched off into 2 sections: The Officers Pistol and the "Kentucky" Pistol.
There was one type of holster. It was made of heavy,black leather flared at the top to hold the but of the gun and the the projecting cock or barrel.

The gun shown to the left is one of the american pistols. This particular gun was called an Officers Pistol. These types of guns were particularly made in England.
