Vulnerable Population: Mental illness

Intro Continued

- Many people who have a mental disorder can’t function in society, treatment becomes costly, functioning in society becomes more challenging

- Approximately 26.2% of 18 year and older adults have been diagnosed with a mental disorder that is roughly 57.7 million people.

- At least 13% between 8-15 year old, 8% between 12-17 year old have a diagnosable disorder, however only 39% have been diagnosed and treated.

- More than 50% of homeless have a mental disability per WHO where as 2/3 of the population who have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS have also been diagnosed with depression.

- Of all the people who could be diagnosed only roughly 25% seek help.

Introduction

- Access to treatment become harder for the mentally ill due to income and possibly living on the street.

- Let me paint a clear picture, if over 50% of the homeless population at any given time have a mental disorder, do you think they have the means or income to seek treatment? If they can't seek treatment then they can't function normally in society to obtain a job to create income to seek treatment.

- The United States has a lack of mental illness resources, if we could increase resources we could then decrease the amount of homeless, which would decrease the ER bills that are left unpaid.

  • Those who are vulnerable to mental illness are: family hx of mental illness, traumatic or stressful life event (PTSD), traumatic brain injury, use of recreational drugs, and having few personal relationships.
  • Those with mental illnes are at higher risk for for suicide and substance use disorders
  • Some may begin to think they are feeling good and "normal" again so the patient may stop taking medication and relapse.
  • Many have issues seeking mental health services becasue of the stigma behind it
  • According to Healthy People 2020 the goal is to; improve mental health through prevention and by ensuring access to appropriate, quality mental health services.

Cultural background can impact how individuals view ther mental health. For ex. in African American and American Indian culture, environmental factors often increase the likelihood of suicidal behavior. NAMI states that some cultures are prone to brush off symptoms and consider theim signs of a personal weakness or moral feeling.

What is Mental Health?

“state of successful performance of mental function, resulting in productive activities, fulfilling relationships with other people, and the ability to adapt to change and to cope with challenges” per Healthy People 2020. With being mentally healthy it will create better relationships with yourself, family, socially, and in the work environment.

What is Mental Disorder?

classified by “alterations in thinking, mood behavior that are associated with distress and impaired functioning” per HealthyPeople 2020.

-Mental disorders are diagnosed by meeting certain criteria in the DSM-V.

- Mental disorders can lead to disability, pain, and or death.

For this vulnerable population presentation we have decided to focus on the mentally ill population.

prevention and control

Psychosocial concerns

Economic Concerns

Psychosocial adversity has a major impact on mood disorders. Depression is associated with a number of social determinants. To name a few: poverty, gender violence, cultural tensions, social discrimination, political oppression, etc.

  • An estimated 26% of homeless adults staying in shelters live with serious mental illness and an estimated 46% live with severe mental illness and/or substance use disorders
  • Only 41% of adults in the U.S. with a mental health condition received mental health services in the past year. Among adults with a serious mental illness, 62.9% received mental health services in the past year
  • Half of all chronic mental illness begins by age 14; three-quarters by age 24
