Rastafari Religion is Founded

  • Ras Tafari Makonnen (a prince) became emperor of Ethiopia in the 1930s.
  • As emperor the people began to call him Haile Selassie.
  • The Rastafarian religion, was named after his given name (Ras Tafari).
  • Haile Selassie met with Rasta elders in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, in the 1950s.
  • In 1955, he offered 500 acres of his personal land to black people wishing to return to Africa.
  • The “Smile Jamaica” concert took place on December 5, 1976 at the National Heroes Park, in Kingston, Jamaica, performed by Bob Marley & The Wailers.
  • Only 2 days before Marley had almost been killed by gunmen in his house, but survived and was driven up in the Blue Mountains.
  • Nevertheless Marley agreed to perform one song for the 80,000 people in attendance, but it turned into a whole 90-minute performance despite his injuries.
  • Bob Marley and the Wailers were a Jamaican Reggae band and ska vocalist group
  • Discovered and created by Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer (Neville Livingston), and Peter Tosh.
  • By the end of the 1963 the singers Junior Braithwaite, Beverly Kelso, and Cherry Smith.
  • When 1964 finally rolled around Bob Marley and the Wailers had themselves a full band.

Haile Selassie Dies

  • Birth Date: February 6, 1945,
  • Location: Nine Mile (a villiage in Saint Ann Parish), Jamaica
  • Parents: Cedella Booker and Norvil Marley
  • Emperor Selassie was said to have died from respiratory insufficiency on August 27th, 1975, in Addis Adaba.
  • But it's been said that he was taken by members of the Ethiopian military (after he was overthrown) and kept in a bunker for days, until eventually assassinated by them.
  • This is the theory many Rastafarians believe.
  • Haile Selassie visits Jamaica, and the same day he arrived a heavy drought ended.
  • It's said that as soon as Rita saw him, she converted to Rastafari.
  • Bob Marley discovered greater interest in the Rastafarian religion because of Rita and the time in spent in Kingston, Jamaica.
