Psychological Theories 2

Behavioral/ social learning

  • Behavioral is the learning through a process of social reinforcement (reward and punishment)
  • The Behavioral theory brances out with the Social learning theorie which applies with gang prostitution.
  • The Sociol learning theorists argues that peple are not born with the ability to act violently; rather, they learn to be aggressively to achieve through their life experiences.
  • People learn to act aggressively when, as children, they model their behavior after the violent act of adults. Later in life, these violent behavior patterns persist in social relationships.
  • These theories apply to gang prostitution becaused based on the learning theory if a gang member sees his dad hit is mom then he is most likely going to him his prostitute.

Strain Theory

-Adults-

Sometimes society does not provide the means to achieve

cultural goals. For example, for citizens to achieve the American

Dream, society needs to provide access to education and employment

along with other resources.

The "American Dream" places pressure on the individual to conform, they

force the individual to either work within the structure society has produced, or

instead become members of a deviant subculture in an attempt to achieve

those goals .

Those with little former education and few economic resources soon find that they are denied the ability to legally acquire wealth - the preeminent success symbol

(Robert Merton)

Psychological Theories 1

When society fails to provide adequate resources for individuals and there is not

sufficient education to succeed in life people tend to look for the easiest way to make fast money with little to no effort at all. For males, it is to become a gang member,

sell drugs, burglarize, and/or use vulnerable women or girls in sex crime. For

females, selling drugs and the use of their body to their advantage which leads

them to prostitution to gain financial need. Once they get involved in prostitution

it becomes hard to leave that life style because of their insufficient skills.

Psychodynamic

Sociological Theory 1

Strain Theory

-Juveniles-

There are many reasons that women do not or cannot leave prostitution. Ninety-two percent of women who were involved in prostitution said

they wanted to leave prostitution, but couldn't because they

lack basic human services such as a home, job training,

health care, counseling and treatment for drug or

alcohol addiction.

Much of the literature on sex workers paints a

portrait of early childhood abuse, neglect and

confusion. It is important to note, however, according to

the strain theory that it is the experience and feelings of

anger and frustration from failed attempts at achievement,

failure of primary relationships with caregivers, or victimization

that leads to the experience of strain.

Abused females frequently run away, but they have difficulty surviving on the street. They are labeled as delinquents, making it difficult for them to obtain legitimate work. Juvenile justice officials, in fact, often arrest such females and return them to the families where they were abused. Furthermore, these females are frequently abused and exploited

by men on the street. As a consequence, they often turn to crimes

like prostitution and theft to survive.

(Robert Agnew)

When they feel no sense of love or connection at home they tend

to look for it somewhere else. That is when it starts to become

dangerous because they become prey to gangsters/ pimps

that show them the attention they been seeking

and buy them expensive things to

lure them into becoming

prostitutes.

  • The psychodynamic model of the criminal offender depicts an aggressive, frustrated person dominated by events that occurred rarely in childhood.
  • because they had unhappy experiences in childhood or had families that could not provide proper love and care, criminals suffer from weak egos or damaged egos that make them unable to cope with conventional society.
  • weak egos are associated with immaturity, poor social skills, and excessive dependence on others.
  • based on this theory prostitutes typically do not leave their pimp or job because they have low egos and are dependent of them.

Sociological Theory 2

-Social Disorganization-

“Poverty is the mother of crime.”…Marcus Aurelius

Residents in crime ridden areas try to leave at the earliest

opportunity. As a result, they take little to no interest in what the community needs. So, all common sources of control such as family, school, business, and social service agencies are weak and disorganized which then allows gangs to form and are free to recruit boys and girls who feel detached and alienated from their social world

(Kornhauser, 1978).

These residents typically do not own their own homes, which lowers their investment in the community and they often do not know their neighbors well, since people frequently move into and out of the community. This dissolves neighborhood culture and organization.

Women Who Become Victims

The social disorganization theory suggests that living conditions of the individual or group of individuals directly influence the decision to commit crimes like prostitution, theft, burglary, and potentially more violent

crimes like rape or murder (Siegel, 2015).

  • Don't have a strong family bond
  • Don't have a home
  • Doesn't want to strive in school
  • Doesn't want the life they have

When this occurs in a neighborhood it leaves the doors wide

open for adolescences to get involved in criminal activity

because really what teenager doesn't want to have

money. Unfortunately that sometimes makes

females become victims of prostitution.

  • Ages range from 12-17
  • Victims of Rape
  • Runaways
  • New "Boyfriend"
  • Seeking Fame
  • Forced threw fear
  • Attics of drugs
  • Don't have a home
  • 18 and out of foster care
  • Want to feel Needed & Loved
  • Ones who have no Boundaries
  • "have Life all figured out
  • Always Alone
  • Attracted to lavish things
  • Easy money

Causes

It is the fact of the sexual abuse more than anything else ,that seems to underlay how and why some of these women become prostitues. These are the ladies that are likely to be addicted to drug and have serious health issues which is why the resort to gang prostitution or prostitution alone to gain a sense of love and comfort from these guys.

  • The most common words said about a prostitute is that they are all street walkers, drug addicts, controlled by pimps, and willing to accept a few dollars for their services.
  • Do you ever think what pushes a girl to act upon such behavior?
  • This type of crime may developed from roots in the developmental perspective, which is the view that criminality is a dynamic process, influenced by social experiences as well as individual characteristics.

  • Female gang involvement has been increasing through the decades. There is many reasons why a girl may fall into gang prostitution,a few may be from family stress, economic stress,or a need to feel wanted or welcomed and gain a sense of comfort and protection.
  • 92% of females that had been interviewed say that they had been abused emotionally, physically and sexually before becoming apart of a gang and prostitution.

  • For many victims trauma is influenced by someone they once trusted this impact can make the job by those who are trying to help the victim extremely difficult.

Prevention

SB 955, a bill proposed by senator Holly Mitchell which allows courts to authorize wiretapping during human trafficking investigations

Another measure will allow those convicted of solicitation of prostitution to have the conviction set aside if they are able to prove that they are victims themselves. this is known as AB 1585 by assemblyman Luis Alejo.

Two more measures proposed, known as SB 1165 and SB 1388, allows sex trafficking prevention education in California's public schools and increases fines from $20,000 to $25,000 for placing a minor into prostitution and mandatory penalties from two days to a year in jail for knowingly soliciting a minor for prostitution. All measures were signed by Governor Jerry Brown on September 28, 2014
