Hippocrates of Chios

Early Life

Hippocrates was born on the Isle of Chios. He spent most of his early life as a merchant.

He continued as a merchant untill he got into trouble with some pirates.

By Natalie Bukovec

My Opinion

To me Hippocrates was a fantastic mathematician. Without him math would not be as simple as it is to us today.

Change to mathematics

Hippocrates left his home town and moved to Athens to teach geometry to support himself

Mathematician and Scientist?

Hippocrates not only contributed to geometry, but also to science. He assumed that the Milky Way and the phenomena of comets were merely optical illusions. He believed this was caused by the refraction of solar light and moisture, exhaled by putative planets near the stars and sun. This idea led people to think that light rays could be in a persons eye rather then in the object itself.

First contribution

Hippocrates first and main contribution to math was the first ever "Elements of Geometry" book. This book was the first made geometry text book. This discovery was incredible. It allowed common people to learn geometry.

Second Contribution

Other Contributions

Hippocrates resolved to problem of constructing a cube root. This was one of the main problems with ancient mathematics.

At one time Hippocrates attempted to "square the circle." In other words, he tried to find the area of a circle. His method for this was to divide the circle into multiple "lunes," or moon shaped figures. He added up the area of those shapes and supposed that was the ultimate area.

He also discovered reduction. This is the process of simplifying a problem to get a much less complex answer.
