THANK YOU
Looking Ahead
The testing on the CFRP to Aluminium will be as follows:
- Sand papered
- (increase roughness)
- plasma treated
- (increase surface energy)
- Sand paper + plasma treat
Conclusions from Aluminium-to-Aluminium Bond Tests
- For the epoxy adhesive, plasma treatment improves the adhesive strength.
- Roughened surfaces also show an increase in the bond strength on the same order as the plasma treated samples.
- Roughening and plasma treating the surface does not appreciably improve the bonding strength.
- VHB tape adhesive fail at roughly the same load, tape is not strong in shear loadings
Final Assembly
- Samples bonded using a single lap joint according to ASTM standard
Conclusions from Aluminium-to-Aluminium Bond Tests
- Epoxy bonded specimens show much higher failure loads (An order of magnitude larger) than the VHB tape bonded specimens.
- VHB tape bonded specimens failed by cohesion of the adhesive.
- Epoxy bonded specimens failed by adhesion of the adhesive to the substrate.
- VHB tape specimens extend by an average of 20 % before failure.
- Epoxy specimens have virtually zero strain before failure.
Adhesives
Two different adhesives were used:
- Adhesive tape
- Epoxy based liquid adhesive
Surface Preparation
CFRP Preparation
Four different samples groups (20 samples/group)
(acetone cleaned)
(increase roughness)
(increase surface energy)
- Sand paper + plasma treat
The CFRP was made by us in the UJ Composite Labs.
Hand-Lay-Up.
Bonding of
CFRP to Aluminium
Aluminium Samples and Preparation
Aluminum to Aluminum Bond
- Due to 3M discontinuing the DP - 100 we continued testing with DP - 810
- The non-treated (normal surface) samples were bonded by a single lap joint according to ASTM standard
- Dimensions according to ASTM standards
- Metal supplied by Metal Centre
CFRP to Aluminum Bond
Outline of Research
- Machined to final dimensions
How plasma treating affects the adhesive for bonding aluminum to Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP).
Testing Methodology
Two part experiment:
- aluminium-aluminium bond (establish a benchmark)
- aluminium-CFRP bond
(actual research objective)
