Lord of the flies

The Boys belived that they need to create fire to be able to get rescued. The fire will create smoke so the boats and aircrafts will be able to see it.

Since fear is an underlying motif in both novels, it has a great impact on the lifestyle of the characters as fear can be very controlling, fear can at times even inspire characters to dream of a better life, and finally, fear can establish a hierarchy amoung the characters seperating those who are powerful from those who are weak.

"The fire is the most important thing on the island. How can we ever be rescued except by luck, if we dont keep th fire going? is a fire too much for us to make? [...] Look at us! How many are we? and yet we cant keep a fire going to make smoke. Dont you understand? Cant you see we ought to- ought to die before we let the fire out?" (Golding 87)

Of Mice and Men

"Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They dont belong in no place. They come to a ranch an' work up a stake an then they go inta town and blow their stake, and the first thing you know they're poundin' their tail on some other ranch. They aint got nothing to look ahead to. [...] O.k. Someday- we're gonna get the jack together and we are gonna have a little house and a couple of acres an' a cow and some pigs and-' 'An' live off te fatta the lan', Lennie shouted. 'An' have rabbits. Go on, George! tell about the rabbits in the cages and about the rain in the winter and the stove, adhw tic the cream is on the milk like you can hardly cut it. Tell about that, George.' [...] 'We'll have a big vegtable patch and a rabbit bunch and chickens. And when it rains in the winter, we'll say hell with goin' to work, and we'll build up a fire in the stove and set around it an' listen to the rain comin' down on the roof.'[...] (Steinbeck 13)
