Popular Culture of the 1920's

Automobile in the 1920s

-There were two automotive kings of this time

period. Henry Ford and Alfred Sloan were the

leaders of the transformations that took place in

the automobile industry.

-Henry Ford brought the conveyer belt to the car

industry as a way to bring parts to workers,

causing increased efficiency.

-Alfred Sloan, as the president of General Motors,

eventually became the leader of the biggest

automaking company in the world. He did so

through new ways of advertising and marketing.

-Cars became a new symbol for this era,

symbolizing the consumer society that

America had become.

-In 1919, there were about 6.7 million cars

on roads in America, but by 1929, there were

more than 27 million cars on roads, which

meant nearly one car per house in the

United States.

-Cars promoted family togetherness. They were also thought to have affected things such as church attendance and brought much more freedom to young adults

radio and movies

-The invention of the radio in the 1920's brought the country together

-It was a cheap convinient way to transfer information and ideas

-Radio began broadcasting world affairs and new but eventually led to broadcasting anything people could think of from concerts to church masses.

-Movies were another new source of entertainment during this age. This popular form of entertainment was enjoyed by many.

Airplanes

The airplane was an invention that didn't catch on as quickly as others in the 1920's but it still did catch on. The idea of Air-mail brought more popularity to airplanes and made their use more common. After that, the use of airplanes as transportation for people eventually made way and upper-middle class and above could afford flights.

Charles A. Lindbergh was the first American to fly across the Atlantic Ocean in an airplane by himself. His success made flying even more popular and an even more important invention of the 1920's

An aspect of business that greatly changed during the 1920's was advertising techniques. During this age was when the first psychologist was hired to work behind the scenes in advertising. The success of this changed the advertising world forever and increase sales for the corporations that had the best slogans and most memorable brands. Advertising became more of a mind game than anything and continues to be that way today.

"The Golden Age of Sports"

Baseball became popular in the 1920's. Baseball today is one of America's favorite sports and the 1920's are known as "The Golden Age of Sports" partly because of the growth baseball made during this time period.

The 1920's was a completely new age for Americans, it was a decade of advancements in entertainment,inventions, and sports. This decade was one of change and in a social aspect not much remained the same. America became a consumer society and many added these new forms of entertainment to there everyday lives. The American society greatly benefited from these changes and advancements.

Mass media: all of the communications media that reach a large audience, especially television, radio, and newspapers

Prosperity: The condition of enjoying wealth, success, and good fortune

Consumerism: The theory that a progressively greater consumption of goods is economically beneficial

Mass Production: Manufacturing goods in large quantities

S-Represents two area's advertising and automobiles during this time and shows where things like advertising started off and is a good example of that.
