What does it matter?

What does it mean?

John Rawls’ fundamental theories can be utilized to accurately express the appropriate methods of actions towards two controversial topics facing the United States today

a. Successful leadership by the United States government in providing aid to deserving individuals living under the poverty line

b. Gay marriage rights and equality for all regardless of race, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation

John Rawls “A Theory of Justice” outlines his views on what in society is just and what is not just. He states that the role of justice in a society is to rule out theories which are untrue to the masses and that justice is the first virtue and therefore cannot deny freedom to some but instead demonstrate equality for all. Rawls also challenges that many decisions, actions and judgments towards people or a group of people can be categorized as just and unjust.

Rawls Theory applied to government aid

Many politicians and United States citizens alike believe that government welfare programs should be cut due to generations of families continuing to abuse the system instilled to aid those in struggling times. Government welfare programs allow many families to survive between jobs or in times of economic struggle. Were it not for these programs many people would not even be given the chance to attend high school, much less college. Rawls’ theory describes that the government should be instilled with the benefit of its citizens in mind, and though there are some who abuse the welfare system, it does allow countless others to have a chance to succeed.

John Rawls: A Theory of Justice in comparison to government aid and gay marriage.

A Theory of Justice

"no one knows his place in society, his class position or social status, nor does anyone know his fortune in the distribution of natural assets and abilities, his intelligence, strength, and the like. I shall even assume that the parties do not know their conceptions of the good or their special psychological propensities. The principles of justice are chosen behind a veil of ignorance."

Gay marriage rights

Conclusion

Rawls’ second key point deals with the idea of equality for all, regardless of social status, race or religion. This cornerstone of justice also applies to the prejudice many have against gay and lesbian marriage. However, as Rawls would challenge, if we are truly seeking equality, and a just society, why are homosexuals denied their right to marry?

Rawls theory on what is and is not just, if incorporated, could truly aid many social problems as well as problems within the government today. All people should be guaranteed two essential principles of justice. All should have the extensive liberty to be treated with similar liberties as others, and social and economic inequalities should be regulated so that they are at everyone’s advantage
