CULLING OF OVERPOPULATED SPECIES

What is it?

Culling is used to reduce the population animals by selective slaughter. This is done to save the animals from overpopulation r starvation. The control of the animals population can also benefit the environment and other species.

Why is culling needed?

Culling is essential for the health of the nations herd. It maintains the balance between numbers and the environment they live in

Koalas

In parts of Victoria and South Australia has seen an overpopulation of koalas. According to the National Koala Conservation and Management Strategy, it is only legal to cull koalas when the animals and severely ill or suffering in some way. The overpopulation are an issue because many koalas are suffering from starvation and it is a serious problem.

Kangaroos

Kangaroos can cause damage to crops and fences, and also become hazards on roads. Some aspects of culling are also potentially damaging to the species.

Overpopulation

Animal overpopulation occurs when an ecosystem is unable to support the existing wildlife because there are to many of a given species. the environment suffers due to the strain from the natural activities of the overpopulated species.
