Setting

The setting is in the Land of Elyon, including Bridewell and the forests and mountains in between the walls of stone.

Characters

The characters of The Dark Hills Divide are Alexa Daley, her father, Ganesh, Nicolas, Warvold, Grayson, Silas Hardy, Pervis Kotcher, Yipes, Darius, Odessa, Sherwin, Ander, Murphy, the convicts, the people of Bridewell, and the animals at the feast.

"Thomas Warvold was an orphan. On his thirteenth birthday he wandered off from his hometown, no one knowing or caring where he'd gone. A seemingly worthless child with no parents or future to speak of; it's doubtful anyone even noticed he had departed. Thomas was a spirited boy, smart and full of adventure. After many years of traveling abroad, Thomas returned, and eventually persuaded others to join him in a place most everyone believed was haunted, dark, and dangerous. Thomas created walls to protect the people, and under his lead, others saw the town start to thrive. This caused more people to believe the area was safe, and move in. Soon the town was full, but was boxed in by mountains to the north, forest to the east, and the The Dark Hills to the west. More people were moving to this new kingdom. Warvold needed more space.

Then he had a wonderful idea."

This story begins with Alexa and her father driving their horse-drawn wagon to Bridewell, the hub of the four kingdoms; Lathbury, Turlock, Lunenburg, and Bridewell. Alexa's father is telling her the story of how the walls that surround the Land of Elyon were constructed.* Her father continues telling her the tale.*

Rising Action

That night at dinner, Warvold's son tells Alexa about his mother's Jocastas (jewels with miniscule inscriptions on them). The next day, Alexa finds out that the two library cats have Jocastas on their collars. With a magnifing ring, she sees the insriptions.* The next morning, her dad leaves, and she slides across a chair and finds a trapdoor with a keyhole. The key she took from Warvold's locket fits, so she opens it, revealing an underground tunnel. She goes in and walks for a long time. After she almost gives up, Alexa gets to a trapdoor on the other side. It is opened, and she sees a forest. When she sees the person who opened the trapdoor, she is shocked.

The Inscriptions

The first inscription was a maze with a mountain, which she doesen't understand, until Grayson tells her that it is a map of the library. When he smudges it with a jam-coated finger, she can see everything fall into place.

Ganesh, the mayor of Bridewell is at the lodge, and so is Warvold, now an old man. When Alexa goes to her room, she takes out the spyglass she brought from home, stands on the window sill and tries to see out. She is caught, by Pervis Kotcher, captain of the guards, whom she loathes. He breaks the spyglass. Warvold comes in, and takes Alexa for a walk. During the walk, he dies, leaning against the walls. Alexa unlocks his locket, and takes out the small silver key inside.

Climax

Alexa races to the library, and hurries to the trapdoor. Using the key, she goes into the tunnel, armed only with a fire poker. She sees him coming, and knows she was correct. It is Ganesh.* She hits him in the leg with the fire poker, breaking the skin and bone. He wrenches the poker from her hand and leaves. She follows him. He tells her his story, and tries to kill her.* Darius comes through the wall and kills Ganesh before he can kill Alexa.

Ganesh's Story

How Alexa Knew it Was Ganesh

You find out later that page 194 was about a king named Ganesh.

Ganesh was a convict who built the walls. When he was sent into the wilderness, he grew a beard to cover up the C on his cheek. He became mayor of Bridewell. He also poisoned Warvold, so that he didn't stand in the way of his plans.

The Story of the Walls Being Constructed

To protect Bridewell, all of the townspeople get together and build a wall of stone brick around the spot on the map marking Bridewell. They take blocks from the surrounding walls and use them as a barrier. Once Alexa finishes helping, she goes back to her room and inspects Warvold's favorite book, which Grayson gave to Alexa. The window is open, and when a wind from the storm comes in, the book blows apart. Pages fly everywhere. A secret slot in the cover tells her to find page 194. She does, and immediately knows who Sebastion is.

Yipes gets humans to come in the tunnels, and Alexa is taken above ground. She says goodbye, and then sees the result of their trap. Not many men remain. Pervis tells her that most of them had died for disease years ago. Bridewell is safe.

Resolution

When Alexa returns home she ends up telling her dad what happened. He holds a council meeting. Her father tells the council everything, and even tells them about the attack on Bridewell that Sebastion is planning.

Alexa convinces the people to knock down the walls, because of Yipes's note to her. When the wall separating Darius's family is knocked down, she hears them call out "Thank you."

Rising Action

The next day, Yipes brings Alexa to Darius the wolf. He brings her to a tunnel and tells her to go through the tunnel. Alexa does, and sees a convict, one of the ones that made the walls.* She crawls back, and Darius leads her to a bunny, ignoring her questions. She and the bunny go through another tunnel. On the other side, there is a huge gathering of animals, come to see her. Ander, the huge black bear tells her that the convicts are going to invade Bridewell, and their leader is one of her friends. She has to go find this leader, named Sebastian. He gives her a map from Yipes, showing places the convicts can attack, and sends her home.*

How Alexa Knew The Man Was A Convict

Rising Action

Yipes also gave Alexa a note. This note said that the only way they could survive is if they tore down what the built.

All convicts were branded with a C burned into their face. This way, if people saw a criminal, they would recognize them.

A extremely small man opened the trapdoor. He says that his name is Yipes, and so Alexa follows him up the mountain. After climbing for many hours, Alexa collapses in a stream. When she finally gets up, Yipes tells her to follow the stream to the pool, and to retrive the stone from the it. She walks to the pond, and grabs the glowing green stone.*

The Stone

Yipes tells her that the stone gives her the power to talk to animals, but it will start to fade once she interacts with humans again.

The Story Continues

"Warvold went to the town of Ainsworth and took 300 of their harshest criminals, but said he would return them in 10 years. The leaders of Ainsworth agreed, so Warvold took the prisoners and made them build the walls to what would become the four kingdoms. He returned the criminals after they built the walls, and our kingdom has thrived ever since."
