Someone would become an explorer if where they lived was becoming inhabitable either due to social situations, (like the king wanted to chop your head off) or environmental conditions, (where resources were used up or weather changed. Other reasons would be for the money or fame. Explorers in the past were mainly motivated by the money. Taking a risk, (explorers) makes money or sometimes death.

Marco Polo was a Venetian merchant traveler whose travels are recorded in Livres des merveililles du monde, a book which did much to introduce Europeans to Central Asia and China. He learned the mercantile trade from his father and uncle, Niccolo and Maffeowho traveled through Asia, and apparently Kublai Khan. In 1269, they returned to Venice to meet Marco for the first time. The three of them embarked on an epic journey to Asia, returning after 24 years to find Venice at war with Genoa;Marco was imprisoned, and dictated his stories to a cellmate. He was released in 1299, became a wealthy merchant, married and had three children. He died in 1324, and was buried in San Lorenzo.

Marco Polo sailed the sea to China and served Kublai Khan, the Mongol prince. He came back with gold and spices, then was imprisoned when he came back to Venice, because they were fighting Genoa. He died soon after he was released. Marco Polo married Donata Badoer and had three children, Bellela, Donie, and Sanina. Some people say he had four kids but the fourth died before it was born. Marco Polo is greatly remembered now and will not be forgotten. His most prized posession from Kublai Khan was The Golden Tablet of Command, an ancient tablet of gold with old Mongol markings.
