  • Olivia’s brother, Charles Langdon, was a passenger with Clemens on the Quaker city in 1867.
  • While they were on board, Charles showed Samuel Clemens an ivory painting of Olivia and Clemens instantly fell in love with her.
  • A few days after the dinner, Clemens went to see Olivia at her house. He was intending on only dropping by for 15 minutes. However, he stayed at the house for 12 hours. Eventually they got married.

  • They lived as equals in their marriage. Which had to do with Clemens' views on women as he says in his speech "The ladies."
  • Clemens liked to accept advice from Olivia. He would leave his work out for Olivia to proofread.
  • When Olivia Langdon's health was very low, she had to remain separate from Clemens until she was well again.

What kind of marriage did they have?

How did Sam Clemens meet Olivia Langdon?

“Woman is all that she should be, gentle, patient, longsuffering, trustful, unselfish, full of generous impulses. It is her blessed mission to comfort the sorrowing, encourage the faith of purpose, succor the distressed, uplift the fallen and befriend the friendless. ("Twain’s Children."
