The Nile Crocodile and the Egyptian Plover Bird

By ALiya and Marko

The Relationship Between the Nile Crocodile and the Egyptian Plover Bird

This is a common example of mutualism between the Nile Crocodile and the Egyptian Plover Bird. The Nile crocodile opens its mouth to permit the Egyptian plover bird to feed on any leeches attached to its gums. This means that the Plover bird recieves a free meal to eat, and the crocodile gets a clean mouth. This benefits both animals in different ways. This is not an example of parasitism because none of the animals involved, are harmed. This is also not an example of commensalism because both of the animals are affected.

The Nile Crocodile

Nile Crocodiles' brains and hearts are more advanced than those of any other living reptiles. They have changed little in 65 million years. In contrast with lizards, they have a "high walk"; this means that they swim with their tails, but their hind feet are webbed and can be used to submerge quickly. Adult Nile Crocodiles weighing 2,200 pounds and 21 feet long have been recorded.

The Egyptian Plover Bird

This is a distinctive looking small shorebird that resides in sandy areas near riverbeds. Unlike many ground nesting shorebirds that are more cryptically colored to blend in when sitting on a nest, the Egyptian plover has very bold patterns of black, white, grey and tawny feathers. Their plumage pattern makes them easy to identify. Although sociable outside the breeding season, pairs are very territorial during breeding. Pairs will aggressively defend the nest from intruders.
