Disease and Life Expectancy

Case Study

Infant Health and Diet

There have been many incidents in which a family is pregnant with a second child and has to abort. This is because of a rule in China that only allows one child per family (one-child policy). A 44 year old woman, Xiao, in China is pregnant with her second child. Xiao's 13 year old daughter is upset by this because of the one-child policy and threatens her parents. She says that he will commit suicide if they don't abort the newly conceived baby. Of course the parents didn't take her seriously until she started cutting her wrists. Xiao and her husband agreed to terminate the pregnancy due to their daughter's actions. When they went to the doctor for the abortion, he said that it is very normal for an only child to act that way. I thought it was odd for a 13 year old to threaten to kill herself for such a minor reason.

The most common illnesses in China are bacterial diarrhea, hepatitis A, typhoid fever, hantaviral hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever, and plague. This is because china has such a dense population, it is easier to spread disease. Most of these diseases are spread or caused by ingesting food or water that contains bacteria, fecal matter, or that certain disease. There are hospitals and facilities around China that provide treatment options to some of these diseases that not everyone can afford. The life expectancy in China is roughly 75 years old.

Nutrition and Diet

The infant mortality rate (death rate) is about 12.2 deaths per every 1,000 births. For males, it is about 12.4 deaths and for females, it is about 12 deaths. The average number of children per household is one due to the rule that only one child is allowed per family. This rule has caused the number of disabled children born to decrease.

The nutrition and diet of China depends on their most popular foods such as rice, chicken, tofu, wontons, dumplings, chow mein, duck, spring rolls, etc. The average water consumption is about 116,764 gallons a year. In 1980, about 30% of the population were malnourished. This percent has lowered due to economic growth that helps them earn more money.

Thank You!

Conclusion

China's prominent health concerns are smoking, server acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), HIV and AIDS, tuberculosis, iodine deficiency, and leprosy. A good solution for these concerns are to decrease the cost of vaccines, treatment, and rehabilitation. By doing this, it allows people, wealthy or poor, to receive attention to their issue and a cure. For smoking, it would be best to advertise the effect that smoking can have on a person. I would be hard to eliminate them from stores, but the stores can raise the price which would make them harder to purchase.
