Political Problems that arise

Countries in the Middle East always keep water to themselves due to the lack of it. Also pieces of land are always fought for due to religious beliefs.

Cause

Ex. Turkey keeps dams on the major rivers so they can keep it to themselves. The ISIS or ISIL terrorist group also tries taking over parts of Syria.

Political Problems

that arise

As a result, countries negotiate and fight for what they want. They fight for water and land.

Effect

Ex.Syria and Iraq try to negotiate with Turkey to let them release water. Turkey says no and the fighting begins. ISIS takes over countries like Syria that don't have a proper government.

Drinking Water

Countries under the damed waters recieve little to no supply of water

Effect

Ex. Iraq, which is under Syria, now has 80% less water than it did before.

Drinking Water

Countries in the middle East that have access to fresh rivers and streams are daming them up so they can have all the water to themselves.

Cause

Ex. Syria has damed up the water they have because Turkey has taken some resulting in 40% less water in their drinking supply.

Irrigation

Countries that have damed up local rivers that flow downstream to other countries so they have enough water to irrigate their crops. But that comes at a price.

Cause

Ex. Turkey has damed up the Tigris and Euphrates river so that their county has enough to farm.

Irrigation

As an effect countries downstream suffer when it comes to irragating their crops.

Effect

Ex. Syria and Iraq have now lost a major amount of water. Making crops will be much harder

Why is water unequally distributed in the Middle East?

There are many reasons why water is unequally distributed in the Middle East. Dams, nationalism, climate and war answer all these questions.

Conclusion

Areas without Fresh Water Sources

There are many cause and effects to the unequal distribution of water in the Middle East. If the leaders of the Middle East came together and divised a strategy, life might be more simple for the Southwest Asians.

The Unequal Distribution of Water in the Middle East

Some Southwest Asian countries can't afford to buy or desalinate water. Some countries are lucky that they can due to a natural resources they have.

Effect

Ex. Saudi Arabia is lucky that they are a rich country, due to their oil, so they can afford to desalinate water. Afghanistan isn't a rich country so they tend to have lots of water shortages.

Areas without Fresh Water Sources

Areas without fresh water sources must either buy from other countries or invest in Desalination.

Cause

Ex. Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, and many other countries in the Middle East don't have access to fresh water sources
