- At the beginning of the book Liesel loses her brother from throwing a fit on a train.
- Her brother Werner is buried by the train tracks. This is where Liesel find the book "The Grave Diggers Handbook"
- She is sent to go live with her foster family the hubermanns.

- Two bullies make fun of Liesel. She ends up fighting them and wins.

- Nazis come to check the basement for a bomb shelter.
- Hans Hubermann gets sent away to war with Alex Steiner.
- Max sneaks onto a train to Munich.
- Hans returns from war with an injured leg.
- Liesel finds Max in the parade but is taken by Rudy.

- Leisel leaves germany because Hitler was defeated.
