THE EARTHQUAKE IN HAITI AND HOW IT AFFECTED CHILDREN

How did the earthquake in Haiti affect the children?

Haiti:

- situated in Central America

- Third largest country in the Caribbean behind Cuba and Dominican Republic

- poorest country in the Western

Hemisphere

How we can help?

Organizations: People can help donating money

Volunteers: help Haiti and inform themselves

Adoption: More people adopting means more lives are saved

In 2010 Haiti suffered a catastrophic magnitude 7.0 earthquake.

It affected more than one million people

After this earthquake many people were left without a home, family and work.

The vulnerability of children in Haiti had increased dramatically since this earthquake.

Main Idea

Not everyone has the opportunity to live with an education, food, home and love. These kids are suffering lack of these things and more, we have to help them.

After searching, we realize that the earthquake negatively affected the children in many ways.

How do people mistreat them?

  • Children are forced to work under terrible conditions without pay and controlled through mental and physical abuse

This situation still is affecting the country, and the government can't find a solution to this problem.

  • Girls are viewed by men in the family as objects for sexual exploitation

Post-disaster situations:

- women and girls are at risk from sexual violence

- reduced access to sexual, reproductive and maternal health services

- Girls in camps are also at risk of sexual exploitation

- Child prostitution

Restaveks (domestic slaves)

Children from Haiti have been violated, kidnapped, forced to work, abused and exploited since years, but now, after the earthquake all that has increased a lot.

400,000 children were living in orphanages

Approximately 3,000 children are trafficked out of Haiti each year.

80% have at least one living parent, many of them are abandoned by their families.

The 2010 earthquake has led to an increase on this activities

Orphanages seems to help and take care of abandoned children but that is not true
