Gender Roles

Gender roles as it relates to media:

  • glorifies stereotypes of women and the characteristics of the daily woman
  • women are sexualized in music videos and fictionalized, which leaves youth believing a false model

Hypocrisy

p;'i m

Comparing

Male and Female

Rap Verses

Behavior that contradicts what one claims to believe or feel

  • Hypocrisy is used in gender roles when society thinks it is unacceptable for women to do things that men do
  • Society has made a fairly unfair world for women in terms of song lyrics.
  • Many songs can have the same lyrics but different reactions.
  • When a male raps a certain lyric, it is "relatable" "fye" or "lit"
  • When a female raps that lyric she is a "thot" "slut" or "hoe"

Heteropatriarchy in the Workforce

  • Most high paying jobs in today's society are reserved for your trypical hetersexual businessman.

Heteropatriarchy

in

Rap Music

  • Engineering/Tech
  • Construction/Architecture

What is Heteropatriarchy?

unearned heterosexul male privilege

Heteropatriarchy in the Music Industry

Heteropatriarchy: political system

in which the male gender and those

who practice heterosexuality have

dominance over other genders

and sexual orientations

  • The Hip-Hop/Rap industry is dominated by heterosexual African-American males.
  • Many female Hip-Hop/Rap artists are introduced to the industry through heterosexual males.
  • For example:
  • Lil Kim and Biggie
  • Nicki Minaj and Cash Money
  • Foxy Brown and LL Cool J

Heteropatriarchy in Media

  • Heteropatriarchy is a little different than the work force when it comes to the media. Social Media is dominated by lighter skinned, big bootied women with perfect makeup and Fashion Nova clothing.

Trap Feminism

Changing the Game

  • Sesali Bowen defined trap music as something other than luxury rap. It is "youthful", and its about "getting money, as opposed to having money".
  • One of the most important parts of this reading is when she examines the song "Make it Rain" by Travis Porter.
  • "You wanna see some ass. I wanna see some cash"
  • She then explains "When we step away from the filter that views women like this as victims to a male-dominated sector, and instead accept them as independet agents navigating their daily spaces, we're able to seek and find trap feminism". (Bowen, 2014).
  • The world does not see women to be rappers the same way that they do not see women as sexual beings.
  • Society blindfolds itself when women decide to be free.
