The Holocaust was a wave of mass murder that swept across Europe
eliminating about 4,500,000 people including 1,500,000 children. leaving only a few survivors.
Born May 27, 1917 in Vilnius Lithuania, Shep Zitler was drafted into the polish army in his early 20's and later was taken in as prisoner by the Nazis.
Luckly for Zitler he was spared the death camps to which most jews were ordered.
Instead he was put to work in a series of forced labor camps.
In the mean time Zitler came to learn that his parents and three of his four sisters, their spouses and children were all murdered in the holocaust.
After the war Zitler made his way to New Orleans, where he met and married his wife Lillian weinstein. His wife for thirty-eight years before her death in 1987. Zitler later remarried.
Zitler was the first president of a group called The New Americans Social Club. There mission was to support one another by educating New Orleans about the holocaust.
Shep Zitler spent his retirement teaching middle and high school students the horrors of the Holocaust.
On December 1st 2009, Shep Zitler past away at the age of 92 of a heart attack. He collapsed in his parked car outside of a resturant, where he was looking forward to watching the saints play the biggest game of the season.
