Hey! Hey! LBJ! How many kids did you kill today?!

Social

Lyndon B. Johnson betrayed the trust of

the nation when he lied about his involvement in

the Gulf of Tonkin, on August 7th, 1964, saying that North Vietnamese soldiers attacked American ships unprovoked.

This provoked a restless youth

and incited protests against his

government. Many protested

against the "recolonization" of

Vietnam.

The legal age of

adulthood was changed

from 21 to 18 in order

to draft more soldiers. (26th

Amendment)

Muhammad Ali was quoted saying, "Ain't no Vietcong

ever call me nigger," embodying the sentiment of

many African American's and summarizing adroitly the

injustice of the drafts.

Economic

The American government spent $167 billion dollars on a war much of the country was against.

The Great Society (a plan of racial and economic reforms similar to the New Deal) funded by Lyndon B. Johnson and fellow democrats in Congress stretched the Federal Bank too thin when coupled with war costs.

Political

The war in Vietnam severely

damaged the peoples' trust in

the government's intent.

For years

following, the

military was

deeply

discredited. And

veterans were

judged and shunned

for participating in

the war.

Conclusion

The Vietnamese War, being the only war

America ever lost created tensions that

persisted long after military efforts

were drawn down.

And one more thing...

Despite the success of many Kennedy and Johnson economic policies, the Vietnam War was a important factor in bringing down the American economy from the growth and affluence of the early 1960s to the economic crises of the 1970s.

Analyze the ways in which the Vietnam War heightened social, political, and

economic tensions in the United States. Focus your answer on the period 1964 to 1975.

The most immediate effect of the Vietnam War was the staggering death toll. The war killed an estimated 2 million Vietnamese civilians, 1.1 million North Vietnamese troops, 200,000 South Vietnamese troops, and 58,000 U.S. troops. Those wounded in combat numbered tens of thousands more. The massive U.S. bombing of both North and South Vietnam left the country in ruins, and the U.S. Army's use of herbicides such as Agent Orange not only devastated Vietnam's natural environment but also caused widespread health problems that have persisted for decades.

The US dollar was

severely devaluated

because of military

need for weapons

not in abundance.

Nixon was elected in 1968

because Democrats expanded

the military effort.
