The executive branch consists of the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Comptroller of Public Accounts, Land Commissioner, Attorney General, Agriculture Commissioner, the three-member Texas Railroad Commission, the State Board of Education, and the Secretary of State. One incredibly unique fact of the Texas executive branch is how limited the powers of the governor are. For example, all executive officers (except for the Secretary of State) are elected independently, not by the governor. One major reason the governor's power is so limited is because of all the elected officials in the executive branch. Another notable weakness of the governor is their limited role in the creation of the state's budget. The Lieutenant Governor is one other elected officer which many believe actually has more authority than the governor. They are the leader of the Texas Senate and chair the Legislative Budget Board. Other senior executive officials provide specific services. For example, the Attorney General gives legal advice and represents Texas in certain court cases, and the Agriculture Commissioner enforces agricultural laws and aids farmers. The executive branch also includes some 200 agencies, boards, and commissions. These Departments enforce state laws and provide Texans with various services.

Role of Executive Branch

The Executive Branch

The executive branch enforces laws. It does this through its different positions and agencies, which all have their individual responsibilities. It also manages and conducts the daily business of the state.

The executive branch is one of the three branches of Texas government. It is called the executive branch because it executes and enforces law. The executive branch is the one calling the shots and putting policies and laws into effect, specifically the laws and policies set in place by the legislative branch.

History of the Executive Branch

The executive branch was created, along with the Texas government and constitution, in 1836. The Texas constitution was heavily modeled after the U.S constitution. It had the same branches of government and a similar bill of rights. This constitution did not last, though. Texas annexed to the United States of America in 1845, and so created a completely new constitution. After this, four more constitutions were made due to the Civil War and reconstruction. The current constitution is the Texas Constitution of 1876, which was created when the Democrats regained control of state government. Despite all these constitutions, the executive branch and its system were virtually untouched, aside from the governor's responsibilities changing drastically.
