The gowns women wore in the upper classes were styled to be tighter around the upper body like a corset, and a full skirt. The dresses were large and heavy. They typically exposed much of the neckline. Women in the lower classes did not usually wear a corset. They also were looser fitting so they would not be very restricting.
Men's outfits consisted of a shirt, a doublet which is a fitted top, and then a jerkin or a jacket. Men also wore upper hose that were met by the stockings. If a man was in the working class he would most likely just wear the lose fitting shirt.
Children from this time period dressed to reflect their parents. Both boys and girls wore dresses and toddlers. When boys hit the age of seven they received their first pair of breeches.
Men tended to have their hair bobbed either curly or straight. Women wore their hair back and wore headdresses.
After the plague decreased the population grew, and so did the wealth. The new middle class came about which included bankers, merchants, and tradespeople.
The Renaissance was a time of new things. New inventions were made like the Gutenberg press, new instruments and maps to make exploring the seas easier.
What was the fashion like during the Renaissance era?
Other than the social classes, art, literature, and philosophy became a major part of society during the Renaissance period. Education was now being emphasized and sonnets and dramas were being written.
There were four social classes of this time period. At the top were the nobles who owned most of the land. After the nobles came the merchants who were the newly rich. The middle class was made up of bankers and the tradespeople. The working class was the last class.
Many of the colors worn at this time period were dark. Wrist ruffles and collars wee made of white linen for accent. Black velvet was also a commonly used during this time.
Different countries adopted different styles, but certain characteristics were in all countries such as heavy materials, large sleeves, close body garments, large hip-clothing, and heelless shoes.
