Philadelphia Zoo Exhibit:

The zebras share an exhibit with the white rhinos, they have a fairly large turn out space, big trees for shade and a nice watering hole as well.

Proposal: They should make sure the grass is not dense or else the zebra will avoid it. They should have enough water for both the rhinos and the zebras because zebras rely on it.

Possible Enrichment: the best solution is to completely redo the dry grass and replace it with lush green grass.

  • If they spot a predator they bark or yelp loudly to warn the rest of the group.
  • They will Groom each other
  • Communicate through various vocal expressions.
  • Also communicate through position of their ears and tails.
  • Move in zig-zag motions to try and evade predators that are chasing them.

Sexual (reproductive) Behavior

Males have mating calls and their stripes increases their chances with the female. A female zebra that has just given birth, stays with the male for a long period of time then go with a different male . This creates more sexual competition for the males.

Description of Zebra

Zebras are native to Sub-Saharan Africa. There are two prominent zebra types. There is the Plains Zebra and there is the Greyvi's Zebra. Plain Zebra's have broad stripes and about half the size of a Greyvi's Zebra. They may look sort of similar but they have different behavior traits such as Plains Zebras are more defensive than Greyvi's Zebras when a predator is near.
