History of the word Queer

Late 18th & early 19th Century

Where did it start? (1650ish)

Continued with negative vibe

Reclaiming (1980s)

Example

Now used also as a verb:

to quiz or ridicule,

to puzzle,

to cheat

to spoil

Queer Nation began in 1990.

"Gay is great. It has its place. But when a lot of lesbians and gay men wake up in the morning we feel angry and disgusted, not gay. So we've chosen to call ourselves queer. Using "queer" is a way of reminding us how we are perceived by the rest of the world.

(May) have derived from German language

-Words "quer" and "twer" which mean

cross,

oblique,

squint,

perverse,

wrongheaded.

Used as an adjective:

not normal

out of sorts

gidddy

faint

ill

Taken from a "negative vibe" to a positive or neutral term

Working towards liberal conservatism

It is an IDENTITY not a descriptive/objective fact about someone

Not all members of the LGBTQA agree with this or feel this

way. It is a word with a deep hisotry. If they do choose to say this it is because they are apart of the community & have the

privledge to do so.

Do not throw this word around as a joke.

Find a better way to say it even if you "didn't mean it that way"
