Plains and Rivers
Southern Africa's narrow coastal plain and the wide plateau are covered with grassy plains. The largest river in southern Africa is the Okavango River. It flows into the Indian Ocean. The rivers allow irrigation for farming.
Savanna and Deserts
A large Savanna region covers much of Southern Africa. Open grassland areas are known as veld which are in Southern Africa. The Driest place in the region is the Namib Desert. Only half an inch of rain per year.

Southern Africa has some amazing scenery. On a visit to the region, you might see grassy plains, swamps, mighty rivers, rocky waterfalls, and steep mountains and plateaus.
Plateaus and Mountains
Most of the land in Southern Africa lies on a large plateau. In eastern South Africa, part of the escarpment is made up of a mountain range called the Drakensberg. The peaks reach as high as 11,425 feet.
Namib Desert
The name "Namib" is of Nama origin and means vast.
The Namib Desert is considered the oldest desert in the world.
There are some sand dunes, reach more than 300 meters high.
