SHAME
What is it?
EMBARRASSMENT
"There was shame there. Now there was shame everywhere. It seemed like...everyone heard what the teacher said, everyone had turned around and felt sorry for me... Yeah, the whole world heard the teacher that day-we all know you don't have a Daddy'' ("Shame'', pg.3).
SHAME (n):
a painful feeling of humiliaton or distress caused by the conscience of wrong or foolish behavior
shame could come from HUMILIATION
SHAME is MORTIFICATION
"She turned around and looked mad. 'We are collecting this money for you and your kind, Richard Gregory. If your daddy can give fifteen dollars you have no business being on relief... And furthermore,' she said, looking right at me...
'We know you don't have a daddy''' ("Shame'', pg.3).
so, in short...
shame starts out as a secret..
but then it begins to DEFINE you
and it stays with you...
FOREVER
so how do we get rid of it?
so now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. For the Holy Spirit has freed you through Christ Jesus from the power of sin that leads to death.
-Romans 8:1-2
So now Christ has really set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don't get tied up again in slavery to the law.
-Galations 5:1
I don't mean to say that I have already achieved all these things or that I have already reached perfection! But I keep working toward that day when I will finally be all that Christ Jesus saved me for and all he wants me to be. No, dear brothers and sisters, I am still not all I should be, but I am focusing all my energies on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I strain to reach the end of the race and receive the prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us up to heaven.
-Philipians 3:12-14
You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ. He forgave all our sins. He cancelled the record that contained the charges against us. He took it and destroyed it by nailing it to Christ's cross.
-Colossians 2:13-14
So, in conclusion...
EVERYONE has shame
But we don't have to carry it on our shoulders for the rest of our lives
and because of that grace, we have new freedom and hope
The Lord has provided us a way out through His Son, Jesus Christ
So we no longer have that need to carry around our shame...because God has provided us with a way out because of His Son and it is now non-existent because of the cross
