40 and over the Hill

Graduate High School and turning 18.

Age 21, one has achieved another stage of adulthood and can consume alcohol. The Giver never mentioned drinking. I'm not sure if there was a difference that distinguished adults from kids besides their bikes.

Celebrating one's life at death

The coming of age into adulthood. You can vote, drive, work, and live on your own. The baby bird can fly. Lack of choices are what you get in The Giver. The Council decides for the community.

Sign of the end: a life well lived and loved. In The Giver, being released was killing someone, not a natural death.

Its believed you lived at least half of your life and have gained some wisdom. In The Giver, if you were no longer productive, one moved into a old person home.

In Alpharetta, GA its custom to get your 1st cell phone by 6th grade.

Its a test and sign of how mature and responsible can you be. In The Giver, it seems like they gave responsibilities to young kids. Like volunteering for a future job.

Graduating from Elementary School

By the end of elementary school, kids turn into preteens and move on to another school. This is a big deal to parents and the child. Its a sign of moving from childhood to teen hood. In The Giver, this would be age 12 and off to learn your future job.

At age 5, kids go off to Kindergarten

Getting married in my culture is a monumental achievement. Its a sign of being committed to family. In The Giver, spouse are picked out for you. There's no falling in love.

At 15, teens can apply for a learners permit.

Celebrating Milestones are Memorable

In the USA, every child by age 5 goes to Kindergarten. This is the beginning of learning. Its a sign of indoctrinating children to be apart of a productive society. In The Giver, kids went to school as well to learn.

In the culture, of the United States of America, milestones are often celebrated and reinforced by its people. The point is to remember these special times unlike in The Giver where memories are not remember by the community.

Celebrating the birth of a child

The first stage of life begins in the womb and often is celebrated with a party and lots of gifts. This is a sign of the significance of life. Unlike The Giver, where there's a surrogate giving birth and no celebrates the beauty of life.

This stage is introducing them to adulthood. There were no cars in The Giver, only bikes which one could ride at age 9.

Babies First Birthday

Some parents go all out on babies 1st birthday. Sometimes this is babies first time eating cake. This is a sign of marking life's stages. In The Giver, this is where they would name the baby and give it a family.

At 16, you can drive on your own if you pass your test. This is a stage further into adulthood. Teens can work and drive on their own. They are achieving independence. Unlike The Giver, independence may never happen due to the council dictating the community's moves.
